Obama has promised that the US, the biggest polluter in the world, will clean up its act. There are high hopes for President-elect Barack Obama's proposed energy plan at a sewage treatment plant in New Jersey that already runs more than 50% on Wind power. With the $150 billion Obama plans to use to incentivize private investment in clean energy every year, this could be the sewage plant of the future.

バラク・オバマ米大統領は早期の景気浮揚を目指して、2年間で8000億ドル（約72兆円）規模に上る景気対策を打ち出した。施策の中で注目されているのが、いわゆる「グリーンニューディール政策」だ。

　景気対策には、風力発電、太陽光発電、バイオ燃料など石油に代わる再生可能エネルギーの生産を3年で倍増し、住宅200万世帯を省エネ化するといった目標を新たに盛り込んだ。

　「2年間で300万人」という雇用創出目標に、グリーンニューディール政策による創出分は明記されなかったが、オバマ大統領は選挙戦における公約で、再生可能エネルギーの開発・導入に10年間で1500億ドル（約13.5兆円）を投じ、500万人の雇用を生み出すという大胆な目標を掲げてきた。

　環境も雇用も経済成長も。“一石三鳥”を狙う政策は果たして実現するのか──。地球温暖化など環境問題の世界的な第一人者で、歴代政権のコンサルタントも務めてきた米スタンフォード大学のステファン・シュナイダー教授に聞いた。
